A Tambura player, often called a “tanpurist,” is a musician who plays the Tambura (also known as Tanpura), a long-necked, unfretted string instrument. Their role is unique and foundational to Indian classical music, whether in the Hindustani or Carnatic tradition. The Tambura is not a melodic or rhythmic instrument; its sole purpose is to provide a continuous, harmonic drone that serves as a musical anchor for the entire performance
