Gemology (also spelled gemmology) is the scientific study of gemstones. It is a specialized, interdisciplinary field that combines aspects of mineralogy, chemistry, physics, and geology. A professional who works in this field is called a gemologist.
The primary goal of a gemologist is to identify, grade, and evaluate gemstones, whether they are natural, synthetic, or imitations. They use specialized tools and techniques to determine a gem’s properties and, consequently, its value and authenticity.
